Edge Stitch Tutorial

I was sewing many, many ribbon sash for dresses the last few days. I used to have issues with getting the top stitching on the edge of sash, camera strap cover or any straight edge even, without any derailment. Yes it can be done using the regular multipurpose foot, but I struggled and the results are never good enough.

Then I remember this blind hemming foot that comes standard with any sewing machine. I had never used it before because obviously my sewing repertoire is not large enough to include blind hemming anything hahaha...So, after some trial and error, I discovered that this foot is great at keeping my edge-stitching straight and even. I took a few photos and prepared this tutorial for some kindred souls out there who might need this as much as I did. Enjoy!

  1. Never even knew how this foot was called, now what to use it for! So happy to read your post, because straight stitching isn't really my thing either. Thanks a lot!

  2. just tried this and it's absolutely great! My blind hem food looks totally different from yours but it still works. I really struggle with this because my machine goes very fast and I'm just a beginner. You just solved my biggest sewing problem!
    Thank you so much! Sarah

  17. Doing close- edgded top stiching on ribbon trim or just 'quilting' the finished edge down drives me batty! I will definitely try this!

  19. Absolutely brilliant use of your blind foot, too bad mine is made totally different, without the little ledge to use as a guide. One great thing my machine does have is this little button that will lock the foot in place while doing things like a stitch close to the edge and it doesn't allow for the fabric to shift side to side at all, giving you a pretty darn good straight line when you're done.

  22. Yeay!! Same here Mikhaila, I used to hate doing this coz I could not get the stitching close enough to the edge. This foot works like a dream, I just love the results!

  23. Great tutorial!! I went and spent a lot of $$ for a special "edge stitch foot" for my machine only to discover it was exactly the same thing as the blind hem foot that I already had. Bah! But I do love using either foot to make perfectly straight edgestitching.

  28. I googled and saw a few pics of edgestitch foot that looks similar to the blind hem foot! It confuses me sometimes, all the different types available out there but they do come in handy.

Thank you for linking Anne, I really appreciate it! :)

  47. Thanks for the tute. Zura. Never knew the name of the footer & its function but I've seen it somewhere in the sewing box. I really don't have a clue about their types & functions :P...When I was sewing cushion covers for my mom for the 1st time, mom told me to change the footer to 'kasut zip' for sewing zippers & I was scratching my head...like what? Clearly I didn't pay attention during kemahiran hidup class :D
